What can we do to speed up a slow laptop?

Working with a slow laptop, even if the sluggishness happens gradually over time or all of a sudden, is really frustrating. If you face such an annoying situation, don’t get upset, you have got some remedies to revive your device. In fact, you can take several steps to give it a bit of a boost in its performance. We shall see some of the easy things that we ourselves can do to speed up a ‘snail-like’ moving laptop using Windows 10, 8, or 7. Let’s have a peep into the tactics to be adopted to cure system performance issues.

Stop programs running on startup

Like those tray programs, some other programs that are automatically running once you start your laptop can also cause sluggishness to your computer. You can stop these unwanted running programs to increase your computer’s running pace. Similar to programs running in the tray, other programs that automatically run on startup can slow down your computer. Some you may actually want to run, such as antivirus software, but others may be unnecessary. Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager to launch. Place the pointer on the Startup tab and you’ll be able to view each item that runs on startup, along with its impact. Check these and choose which one of these needs to start automatically upon start up. Then click the Disable button. But note that some of these programs are vital for Windows to operate. Make sure you disable only the unnecessary program. If you have any doubt whether the program is vital for the laptop, just search on the web and after that, move forward.

Close system tray programs

If your laptop boots at a very slow pace literally embarrassing a ‘snail’, it is possible that your laptop has very much programs starting up at the same time as the operating system starts. Things in the system tray launch frequently while booting up and then they keep on running when you use the laptop. To access these items, click the upwards arrow toward the right side of your taskbar. If you spot any unwanted programs running, right click them and close them, get a quick booting up next time.

Update your OS, drivers, and apps

Keeping the operating software up-to-date helps greatly in enhancing the performance of the laptop. For those using Windows software, Windows sends notifications when there is an update available. You just have to do as per the instructions given by Windows. You can also check whether you have missed any update. Go to Start and click Settings. Then go to Updates & Security and select Windows Updates. Apart from this, you should also update your system drivers and apps in order to get a better performance.

Delete unnecessary files

Like you clean your home and avoid things that are unnecessary, you need to clean your laptop by deleting unnecessary files. A heap of files causes lag in performance of the laptop. This is especially true if you deal with a lot of large files, such as high-resolution images, videos and audio files. Free up the disk space by deleting unnecessary files and folders every week and also make sure that you empty the recycle bin as well. Hard disk drives generally run at maximum speed until they reach about 90% capacity. It is always recommended not to use the hard disk space above 75% of its capacity for a better performance of the system.

Uninstall programs you don’t use

Like a cart in a store, we heap our laptop with a lot of programs without bothering about how much space they use up. This influence greatly in the slowing down of the laptop performance. So it is better to uninstall any programs you don’t use. Even if you encounter a massive program you need but not always, uninstall it. You can reinstall it once you need to use it. To uninstall a program, head over to Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features. Go though the programs and decide which ones, if any, you don’t need.

Make a disk clean up

Windows software has a built-in tool that helps in cleaning the junk that piles up in the drive over time. You can make a perfect disk clean up by selecting the Disc Cleanup tool. To enable a cleanup, go to Control Panel, choose System and Security, then Administrative Tools, and select Disk Cleanup from the list. From here, select the files you want to avoid and click OK. Now click Clean up system files and select the files you want to get rid of.
